Developing from unpowered observation hot air balloons in the 18th century and even the older kite, aerial warfare has become a multibillion-dollar industry and has led to many advances in technology and techniques such as aerodynamics, propulsion, radar and use of composites and engineered materials such as carbon fibre. Malcolm Swanston has been writing and mapping history for over thirty years, working on subjects ranging from Ancient Rome to Vietnam and beyond. With his son Alexander, he has created maps detailing key events in warfare for a wide range of publications, including The Historical Atlas of World War II.
