The book is a historical novel that describes the movements of the Illinois 87th Infantry during the American Civil War. It is based on a family diary that was carried by my great-grand Father during 18 months of the conflict. The discovery of the diary prompted my wife and I the research the Regiment’s travels and battle assignments then travel to all of the historical locations indicated during their three years of service. It has been described as a family story surrounded by our countries’ greatest conflict. It is a story of a family of patriots studded with interaction of battles, disease, and the loss of a family member. “Following the Footsteps of the 87th” may start on our family farm in Southern Illinois in 1862, but the journey will bring you back to present and what we face still today.
